Of course everyone has to see for himself see how things work out
best. I can only speak from the experiences I have made myself. -
DO NOT try to bring in any type of food. Read the customs form
carefully and throw away anything that is mentioned on there that
may cause you to be fined by the customs people. It is not worth
paying NZ$ 200 because you tried to smuggle an apple. They got
dogs sniffing you - watch out. Check out http://www.maf.govt.nz/mafnet/
for pre-departure info.
- Try to hang out with as few people from your home country as
possible. Especially if you are in NZ to learn English. Maybe find
a Kiwi or multicultural flat. If you prefer hanging out with
people from your home country maybe you should re-consider your
decision of living abroad.
- BE OPEN! NZ and particularly Auckland exists only because of
its diversity. The Maori culture plays the most important role,
but almost as present are the pacific island and asian
influences. A lot of people from Great Britain or British heritage
have shaped the country and of course the common American effects
on the lifestyle are reflected in multiple ways. Remember, other
than English Maori is NZ's official language.
- Kiwis are just about as proud of their country as Americans
are of the United States. Be careful who you offend with any
critical comments.
- Watch yourself when crossing or driving on Auckland's roads.
Auckland drivers are mental. It's live with the rules or die with
the rules ;-)
- Wear 30+ Sunscreen and Sunglasses at all times. In summer the
UV Rating goes as high as 14 on a UV Scale of 0-15. Up to a point
where you actually should not leave the house anymore.
- Bring an umbrella and a rain jacket. Weather gets really
crappy over there - and sometimes it may be to windy to use the
umbrella.
